Watercolor Play

For so many years, I was intimidated with watercolor. I think mostly because I had always heard that watercolor were hard to manipulate and control. I had bought a set about a year ago with the intentions of trying them out. They sat in my supply cabinet until a few months ago.

They say that every artist has their medium. I think I have found mine. I currently have a love with them. Are they difficult to control, absolutely. are they hard to use? I don’t think so. I think the key is allowing the water do what water does naturally and let the pigment interact the way nature intended. The key is  understanding that relationship. I actually think they are kind of freeing. Allowing you to break away from any rigidity or thinking that something needs to look a certain way.

I have been experimenting a little with watercolor and pen and ink. I am really liking the combination. Today I was experimenting with some hummingbird and botanicals.

First I did rough sketches in graphite and then came back over with watercolor and let the colors blended as they wanted. The final step was coming in and adding some definition and form.
