Ink Wash Experimenting

Today I took some time to play around a little bit. It started out as a project but it ended up more of a play session than anything. Play time seems to be when my soul sings. I was go entranced with my playtime that I burned my lunch. All in the name of creativity.

Some time ago I saw a demonstration video on splash ink by by Ming Franz, a local artist. She uses splash ink on rice paper and creates traditional Asian inspired landscapes with the washes. They are beautiful pieces, check them out if you ever get the chance. I am very interested in her technique but I have been playing with it to make it fit my style nod trying to make it a little more free form and not so formal.

I have been interested in the colored inks and creating washes with them since I first saw her technique. I have varied it a little from her techniques some. I have been using 140# cold-pressed watercolor paper with the ink washes.

Today I mixed a few watercolor techniques with the ink washes. I used some rubber cement masking, mostly random patterns. After laying down the ink, I used salt to get some uniques textures and also to help absorb some of the water from the washes. Such fun!
