When I first started to considering watercolors as a medium, I was so intimidated to try them. I bought some waterolors and they sat in a drawer for over a year before I even opened the box. Most of my intimidations had come from others and how they thougt they were difficult to control. I am so glad I didn’t listen to them. I tried them for the first time last fall and fell in love with them. I like the effects you can get with watercolor. I have never found them “difficult” to work with like I had been led to believe. Do you have to understand the medium? “Absolutely”! And I still have a lot to learn……
Attended a workshop today about creating textures with watercolors by Lyn Johnson at the Art On Broadway creative artist space. There were so many great ideas and inforation on how to get textures and effects with watercolors. Lyn started with pigment basics and then coved infomation on masking, resists, pigment absorption, surface grounds, and abrasions. There was also some great ideas and information on pigment application, stippling, and additives that can be used with watercolor and common applications for additives.
It was great that so many of the techniques were done with common household items from around the house like coffee, rice, salt, alchol, soap, and candles forn objects that an be used to create these great textures.
There was so mcuh information to absorb. This could easily have been an all day workshop. It was a great workshop but I sure wish there would have been more time to play and experiment with some of the techniques. I see a lot of play in the future with these techniques in learning thier applications and limitations.
Great workshop!
