Great weekend getaway! I got to get away last weekend to rural Tennessee. There was plenty of giggles, good company, good food, inspiring nature, and let’s not forget aboutthe art. It was just the serenity I had been the much needed getaway and best of all I got to spend some much needed time with my bff.
The last day of my visit we locked ourselves in her art studio and had so much fun. We both have a need to create. We pulled out her homemade gelli-plate and went to town. This was the first time I had play with a gelli-plate. It was lots of fun and a great way to do some printing without a press.
We used some acrylic hobby paints, a small brayer, and miscellaneous items to great impressions on the plate. There were several tools we decided to use for mark-making. This was a really fun process and great that you can get great prints without the use of a press.
After several hours of playing with the gelli-plates we thought it would be fun to do some collaborative pieces. We both have very different styles of working and thought it would be fun. I think these pieces were my favorite.
The first collaborative piece started with some collaged book pages and then the first layer of color. For the texture on this piece we used a hexagon block and some cheese cloth for the texture. The cheese cloth was my favorite texture making tool. I loved how we were able to feed off of each other and react to whatever was done for the previous layers. Very exciting creative process. We got towards the end of the piece and were trying to figure out how to complete the piece. My freind said “if we only had a leaf”… I was like girl we have 150 acres of leaves. It was dark and cold but in the interest of the creative process, went out with flash lights to find “the leaf” we need to complete the piece. The dried leaf didn’t transfer the leaf impression like we thought it would but we got some of an impression. Aftrwards the leaf was highlighted in black ink.
The collaborative pieces were absolutely my highlight of the trip. I was so jazzed about the gelli-plates, I order the ingredients to make one of my own to play with at home. Looking forward to plauog with the plates some more.
Happy creating!
