Sketching The Zoo

I had my regular outing with my Urban Sketching groups this weekend. Our outing was at the zoo this month. It offered an endless possibilities of sketching opportunities. Our group is slowly growing. That is a great thing! It means more are getting out and taking advantage of sketching from life. This is really a diverse group or artists. There are varying skills, talents, and interest but we all come together because we love to sketch.

This was the first time I had drawn from live animals. It was a very new experience. One I would definitely do again. There was definitely a different skill set involved here. With drawing the live animals, you have to either create a mental image and be able to recall it or sketch the basics form an then go from there.

As I was sketching, people with always stop and see what you are doing. Some will comment and others just keep on passing. I think it’s the kids that are the most interested in what you are doing. I enjoy talking to them. If you can inspire even one future artist then it is worth it. There was one young girl that stop to chat with me, I would guess she was nine or ten years old. She ended up telling me about her drawings and that she had been drawing for about a year. We had a nice visit and she was beaming afterwards. It was a good conversation.

I always love seeing everyone’s work when at the end of our outings. I always enjoy seeing what inspires or attracts each of us. There are all different styles and perspectives and we all see the world a little different!

Get out and draw!

Here are some of our group drawings, wasn’t able to capture everyone. Working with a broken phone this week….

  1. How cool. Great drawings! I remember going to the zoo to sketch animals for a ceramics class. We only did outlines. Definitely found it challenging, but it was a lot of fun.
